Sonko Responds to Conjestina Claims: “I Did Not Abandon Her”

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has broken his silence following a viral video showing distressed former boxing champion Conjestina Achieng. The footage sparked widespread concern across Kenya, with many accusing Sonko of neglecting the once-celebrated athlete.

Sonko Denies Abandonment Allegations

Speaking after the video circulated online, Sonko strongly rejected claims that he had turned his back on Conjestina. He described the situation as emotionally painful and clarified that he had supported her in the past through financial and logistical assistance.

According to him, the last time he saw the boxer was when her family picked her up late last year. Since then, he says, she has not been returned to his care, making it difficult for him to continue offering structured support.

Family Role in Her Recovery

Sonko pointed to family involvement as a key challenge in Conjestina’s recovery journey. He explained that whenever she begins to stabilize under organized care, she is often taken away, disrupting progress.

He emphasized that long-term recovery requires consistency, something he believes has been lacking due to repeated interruptions.

Support Given—but Limits Reached

The former governor revealed that he has previously provided financial help and facilitation for treatment. However, he expressed frustration over what he described as a cycle of improvement followed by relapse.

In a notable shift, Sonko stated that he would no longer take Conjestina back under his care, urging her family to assume full responsibility moving forward.

Public Concern Grows

The resurfacing of Conjestina in a vulnerable state has reignited national debate about athlete welfare and mental health support in Kenya. Reports indicate she had recently completed rehabilitation before reappearing in distress, raising questions about the sustainability of such interventions.

A Call for Long-Term Solutions

Sonko concluded by urging well-wishers to keep the former boxer in their prayers while calling for more sustainable and coordinated support systems. The situation has highlighted broader concerns about how retired athletes—especially those facing mental health challenges—are supported after their careers end.
