Kenya is currently experiencing significant rainfall across various regions, leading to disruptions such as traffic congestion and flooding, particularly in urban centers like Nairobi. The Kenya Meteorological Department had previously issued warnings about these heavy rains, predicting accumulations of up to 30mm in certain areas.
The affected regions include parts of the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the Highlands both west and east of the Rift Valley (including Nairobi), and the southeastern lowlands. Counties such as Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Homa Bay, Siaya, Migori, Busia, Kisumu, Kisii, Nyamira, Nandi, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, West Pokot, Turkana, Marsabit, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Machakos, and Kajiado are experiencing these conditions.
Residents in these areas are advised to remain vigilant due to potential hazards such as flash floods and reduced visibility. It's recommended to avoid seeking shelter under trees or near grilled windows to minimize the risk of lightning strikes. The heavy rainfall is expected to persist until Tuesday, March 11, 2025, with a projected decrease in intensity thereafter.
The Kenya Meteorological Department continues to monitor the situation and will provide updates as necessary. Citizens are encouraged to stay informed through official channels and take necessary precautions during this period.
