A 7.7-magnitude earthquake Strucks central Myanmar.

A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar on Friday, March 28, 2025, causing significant destruction and loss of life across the region. The quake's epicenter was located approximately 16 kilometers northwest of Sagaing, occurring at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, which intensified its impact.

Impact in Myanmar

In Myanmar, the earthquake led to the collapse of numerous structures, including religious sites and residential buildings. In Taungoo, Bago region, at least three individuals lost their lives when a mosque partially collapsed during prayers. Mandalay, the nation's second-largest city, reported significant damage, with buildings reduced to rubble and streets littered with debris. The ruling military junta declared a state of emergency across six regions, including Naypyidaw and Mandalay, and initiated rescue and humanitarian efforts.

Effects in Thailand

The tremors extended into neighboring Thailand, particularly affecting Bangkok, located approximately 800 miles from the epicenter. In the Chatuchak area, a 30-story high-rise under construction collapsed, resulting in at least two fatalities and trapping dozens of construction workers under the debris. Emergency services launched extensive rescue operations to locate and assist those trapped. The Thai government declared Bangkok a disaster area and established an earthquake response command center to manage the crisis.

Regional Tremors

The earthquake's reach extended beyond Myanmar and Thailand, with tremors felt as far as China's Yunnan and Sichuan provinces, causing house damage and injuries. In Bangkok, the seismic activity caused rooftop pools to overflow, sending water cascading onto the streets below, and led to the suspension of metro and light rail services, resulting in significant traffic congestion as residents evacuated buildings.

Ongoing Response

Rescue and relief operations are underway in the affected areas. Authorities in Myanmar and Thailand are working to assess the full extent of the damage, provide medical assistance to the injured, and support those displaced by the disaster. International aid has been offered, with neighboring countries expressing readiness to assist in recovery efforts.
