In a tragic incident on Sunday, February 16, 2025, the National Chairman of the Kenya Primary Schools Heads Association (KEPSHA), Johnson Matheka Nzioka, lost his life in a road accident along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway near Athi River.
Nzioka, who also served as the headteacher of Donholm Primary School in Nairobi, was a respected figure in the education sector. He was known for his vocal criticism of delayed capitation funds, which he argued left many schools struggling financially.
Beyond his administrative roles, Nzioka was actively involved in co-curricular activities. He held positions such as Sub-County Chairman of the Kenya Primary Schools Sports Association and National Vice-Chairperson of the same organization in 2015. Additionally, he served as the Organizing Secretary of the Federation of East African Primary Schools Headteachers, highlighting his commitment to regional educational development.
Nzioka assumed the role of KEPSHA's Acting National Chairperson on March 3, 2021, following the retirement of Nicholas Gathemia. His leadership was marked by a dedication to improving teachers' welfare and advocating for quality education in Kenya.
The Teachers’ Service Commission (TSC) expressed deep sorrow over Nzioka's passing, describing it as a significant loss to the education community.
This unfortunate event underscores the ongoing concerns about road safety along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway, one of Kenya's most hazardous road corridors. Authorities have initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
Nzioka's death is a profound loss to Kenya's education sector, where his visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to teachers' welfare and quality education will be deeply missed.
