Two Killed as Huge Fire Destroys Businesses at Nairobi's Gikomba Market

A devastating fire swept through Nairobi's bustling Gikomba Market on Sunday morning, leaving two people dead, several others injured, and traders counting losses worth millions of shillings.

The blaze, which erupted in the early hours of the day, rapidly spread across sections of the country's largest open-air market, destroying numerous stalls and merchandise before emergency responders managed to bring the flames under control.

Traders Suffer Heavy Losses

Thousands of business owners were left devastated as their livelihoods went up in smoke. Goods and structures were reduced to ashes, with many traders struggling to salvage whatever remained after the inferno.

Witnesses reported seeing thick clouds of smoke rising above the market as firefighters and rescue teams battled the flames. Traffic disruptions were also experienced along Landhies Road, Kamukunji, Majengo, and surrounding areas as emergency operations continued.

Authorities Confirm Fatalities

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja confirmed that two people lost their lives in the tragedy. Initial reports had focused on the extensive destruction of businesses, but the discovery of fatalities underscored the human cost of the disaster.

Emergency personnel, including teams from the Kenya Red Cross and other agencies, were deployed to assist victims and assess the extent of the damage.

Recurring Fires Continue to Haunt Gikomba

Gikomba Market, one of East Africa's largest trading hubs and a major center for second-hand clothing and household goods, has experienced several destructive fires over the years. These repeated incidents have caused significant financial losses, forcing traders to rebuild their businesses time and again.

Calls for Improved Safety Measures

As investigations into the cause of the latest blaze begin, affected traders are calling on authorities to strengthen fire safety measures and improve emergency response systems to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

The latest disaster once again highlights the vulnerability of thousands of small-scale entrepreneurs who depend on Gikomba Market for their daily income.
