Ketraco Powers Up Sh8.4 Billion Isinya–Konza Line, Lighting the Way for Konza Technopolis

Kenya's electricity grid just got a major upgrade. The Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (Ketraco) has officially energised the Sh8.4 billion Isinya–Konza 400kV transmission line, a milestone set to strengthen power supply to Konza Technopolis and unlock fresh investment in the country's flagship smart city.

What the New Infrastructure Includes

The newly switched-on network features a 98-kilometre double-circuit 400kV line connecting Isinya to Konza, paired with a modern 400/132/66kV substation. Together, they're built to widen transmission capacity, stabilise the national grid, and secure dependable electricity for Konza Technopolis and the wider lower eastern region.

On the technical side, the substation is fitted with two 400/132kV transformers rated at 350MVA each, alongside two 132/66kV transformers rated at 100MVA. This setup gives the grid plenty of headroom to handle rising demand as urbanisation, industrial activity, and digital adoption continue to climb.

Why This Matters for Kenya's Tech Ambitions

The timing lines up neatly with Kenya's push to become East Africa's go-to destination for technology, innovation, and manufacturing. Dependable power has increasingly become a deciding factor for investors weighing where to set up shop, and this project is designed to tip the scales in Konza's favour.

Ketraco's acting Managing Director, Eng. Kipkemoi Kibias, described the energisation as a defining moment in building a transmission network sturdy enough to support Kenya's growing appetite for electricity and its long-term growth ambitions. He noted that the project reinforces grid reliability while guaranteeing quality power to Konza Technopolis and its neighbouring communities.

According to Kibias, consistent and high-quality electricity supply is one of the strongest pulls for investment into technology parks, industrial zones, and emerging urban centres — making this transmission upgrade a key piece of Kenya's broader economic transformation plans tied to Vision 2030.

Beyond Konza: A Regional Power Boost

The benefits stretch well past the tech city's borders. Ketraco says households and businesses across Kajiado, Machakos, and Makueni counties stand to gain from steadier electricity and added backup supply routes that cut down on outages.

By improving interconnectivity within the national grid, the new line gives the system more flexibility to reroute power during maintenance work or unexpected disruptions — a safeguard that should translate into fewer blackouts and more consistent service for residents and businesses alike.

Who Funded and Built the Project

The Isinya–Konza project was jointly financed by the Export-Import Bank of China and the Government of Kenya, with construction carried out by China Aerospace Construction Group Company Limited (CACGC).

The Bigger Picture for Konza Technopolis

Konza Technopolis has long been positioned as Kenya's answer to a homegrown Silicon Savannah — a hub meant to attract ICT companies, research institutions, learning centres, and residential developments. Reliable power has been one of the missing pieces needed to turn that vision into reality, and this transmission upgrade fills a significant part of that gap.

Looking ahead, Ketraco says it remains focused on expanding a transmission system that supports national economic growth, deepens regional power integration, and moves Kenya closer to universal access to electricity.
