HELB First-Time Loan Applications 2026: What New Students Need to Prepare Now

The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has told prospective first-time applicants to start gathering their documents ahead of the official opening of applications, even though no exact date has been confirmed yet.

HELB's Official Advisory

In a notice shared on its X account on June 17, 2026, HELB said First-Time Applications would be opening soon and urged applicants to remain alert for the official opening date through its communication channels. The board's message emphasized that early preparation could spare students unnecessary delays once the portal goes live.

Essentially, the board's position is simple: don't wait until applications open to start hunting for documents. Get organized now so you can apply the moment the window is active.

HELB also pointed students to the application guidelines published on its posters and official platforms, noting that being ready would help streamline the process once applications officially open.

Full Checklist: Documents You Need for a First-Time HELB Loan Application

Based on HELB's published requirements, here's everything first-time applicants should have on hand before the portal opens:

Personal details

  • A valid, active email address and mobile number
  • KCPE and KCSE index numbers, along with the year you sat each exam
  • A clear passport-size photo (JPEG, JPG, or PNG format)
  • A copy of your National ID or Maisha Card (both sides scanned or photographed)

Financial details

  • Valid bank account details, or
  • A registered M-Pesa number that matches your own ID number (not a parent's or friend's line)

For applicants under 18

  • Birth certificate, uploaded as a PDF

For students who were sponsored in secondary school

  • A copy of the sponsorship letter, also in PDF format

Parent or guardian details

  • Parent's National ID number and their registered mobile number
  • A copy of the death certificate (PDF) if a parent has passed away

Guarantor details

  • ID numbers and registered phone numbers for two guarantors (parents can serve as guarantors)

Having all of these ready as scanned copies or photos on your phone or laptop will make the actual application form much faster to complete.

Why This Matters: The KUCCPS Connection

This advisory lands just weeks after the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) shut its revision window on May 22, 2026. Candidates who locked in provisional placements are expecting confirmation of their actual university and course allocations in July 2026.

KUCCPS had reassured applicants in a message that those who secured provisional placements would receive details of their course and university in July 2026, and instructed them not to attempt reapplying.

The numbers behind this year's placement cycle are significant: 212,510 students who scored a mean grade of C+ and above in the 2025 KCSE exams had already applied for placement, representing 79.1 percent of the 268,714 candidates who qualified for university admission.

That means a large pool of incoming university students will need HELB funding soon after their placements are confirmed — which is likely why the board is pushing the "prepare early" message now, ahead of the typical rush once admissions letters go out.

Tips for a Smooth First-Time HELB Application

  • Double-check your M-Pesa registration. HELB requires the mobile money number to be registered under the applicant's own ID — using a parent's or guardian's line could cause delays or rejection.
  • Scan documents in advance. Don't wait for the portal to open before you start scanning IDs, certificates, and photos. Save them in a single folder for quick uploads.
  • Confirm your KCSE index number and year. Errors here are one of the most common reasons applications stall.
  • Watch HELB's official channels. The board has stressed that the exact opening date will be communicated through its verified platforms only — be wary of unofficial sources or scam links claiming early access.
  • Sort out guarantor details early. Since two guarantors are required, confirm their ID numbers and phone numbers in advance rather than scrambling once the form is open.

What Happens Next

HELB has not yet given a firm date for when First-Time Applications will officially open. Students are advised to keep checking the board's official X (Twitter) account and other verified communication channels for updates, rather than relying on rumors or third-party sources.

For now, the most useful thing prospective applicants can do is treat this advisory as a checklist — gather the required documents, confirm personal and guarantor details are accurate, and be ready to move quickly once the application window opens.
