A Melbourne woman, widely described in court as a “housemate from hell,” has been sentenced for a sustained campaign of violence and arson against her former landlord and housemates following her eviction.
Escalating Hostility After Eviction
The troubling sequence of events began after 33-year-old Tsai-Wei Hung was evicted from a rental property in Clyde North, Victoria earlier this year. Furious at being asked to leave, Hung’s behaviour rapidly escalated from property damage to life-threatening conduct.
Within hours of her eviction, she returned to the residence — first throwing eggs at a garage door and then driving her car into the building’s roller door and into parked vehicles, leaving significant damage behind.
Months of Threats and Violence
Hung’s campaign of intimidation continued over approximately three months. Prosecutors detailed how she repeatedly targeted her former housemates and landlord, sometimes confronting them directly and at other times damaging their property.
In one chilling incident, she demanded money from her former landlord and threatened further consequences if her demands were not met. Messages reportedly included warnings that the family should “be careful” or risk similar harm again.
Arson Attack with Occupants Inside
The violence culminated in a serious arson attack. In the early morning hours of a June day, Hung poured a flammable accelerant around the front entrance of the home and ignited it while children and a grandmother were inside. Thankfully, the blaze was extinguished without major injury.
The court heard harrowing victim statements from occupants who spoke of ongoing trauma and a lasting loss of security following Hung’s actions.
Court Proceedings and Sentence
Hung ultimately pleaded guilty to multiple charges, which included several counts of arson, extortion and conduct endangering persons. During sentencing, the judge highlighted the dangerous and persistent nature of her conduct.
She is now serving a prison term after the judge determined that her behaviour represented a serious and sustained threat to her victims’ safety and wellbeing.
