EACC Recovers Sh13.7 Million in Raid on Governor Wamatangi’s Residence Amid Graft Probe.

On Tuesday, April 15, 2025, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) conducted a raid on the home of Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi, uncovering Sh13.7 million in cash—comprising Sh12 million in Kenyan currency and $13,000 in U.S. dollars. This operation is part of an ongoing investigation into alleged financial and procurement irregularities within Kiambu County.

Governor Wamatangi was apprehended alongside eight senior county officials, including County Secretary Peter Njoroge, Finance CEC Nancy Njeri, Lands CEC Salome Muthoni, Chief Officer for Finance William Kinyanhui, Director of Supply Chain Phyllis Wanjiru, Director of Revenue Henry Mburu, Clerical Officer Paul Kibe, and businessman Bernard Kabaiku of M/s Filtronic International Limited.

EACC Director Abdi Mohamud stated that the recovered funds are suspected to be proceeds of corruption, linked to payments totaling Sh1.5 billion made to entities allegedly trading with the county government. The commission is also investigating potential conflicts of interest, procurement malpractices, and abuse of office among the county's leadership.

The raid has sparked public demonstrations, with supporters of Governor Wamatangi gathering outside EACC headquarters in Nairobi, demanding his release. This incident underscores the EACC's intensified efforts to combat corruption and enforce accountability within county administrations.
