A dramatic fire and series of explosions at a gas cylinder depot in Donholm Estate, Nairobi triggered panic among residents early Friday morning, forcing people to flee their homes as flames and smoke engulfed the area.
According to preliminary reports, a fire broke out near a petrol station in New Donholm, eventually spreading to an adjacent gas cylinder storage facility. As the blaze intensified, multiple gas cylinders detonated one after another, producing loud blasts that echoed across the neighbourhood.
Shocking images and videos shared on social media captured residents rushing to safety as thick black smoke rose into the sky and firefighters worked to control the inferno. Emergency crews from the Nairobi City County Fire Brigade were seen battling the blaze and coordinating with security personnel to secure the scene.
Eyewitnesses described the explosions as terrifying, with one resident comparing the sound to “bombs going off” as the fire spread rapidly from a nearby eatery to the clinic and then the gas depot. Roads leading into New Donholm were reportedly cordoned off to facilitate emergency response efforts.
By the time of initial reporting, officials had not yet provided confirmed details on casualties or the full scale of the damage. Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire and assess the impact on surrounding homes, businesses, and residents.
