Marjan Hussein Marjan Resigns as IEBC CEO, Sparking Leadership Shift at Electoral Body

Marjan Hussein Marjan has officially stepped down as Chief Executive Officer and Commission Secretary of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), bringing to a close more than a decade of service within Kenya’s electoral management institution.

In a heartfelt message to IEBC staff, Marjan said his decision followed a mutual agreement with the commission’s leadership to embark on a structured transition in the top administrative office. He expressed deep appreciation for his time at the helm, underscoring his pride in working with a committed team dedicated to fulfilling IEBC’s constitutional mandate.

Marjan highlighted the professionalism shown by staff, particularly during the 2022 General Election, noting their role in maintaining continuity, stability and institutional readiness during a period of change. He urged the Secretariat to uphold the rule of law, protect democratic rights, and continue executing its duties with integrity and excellence.

The IEBC confirmed that Marjan’s departure marks the start of a recruitment process to find a new CEO and Secretary. An interim acting head is expected to be named soon to ensure operational continuity within the secretariat, with the commission stressing its commitment to a smooth and effective leadership transition.

Chairperson Erastus Ethekon praised Marjan’s leadership, especially during challenging periods when the commission operated without a full set of commissioners. The IEBC also said internal reforms are underway to strengthen performance, accountability and preparedness ahead of key electoral cycles.

Marjan first joined IEBC in 2015 as Deputy Commission Secretary and later rose through the ranks to lead the secretariat. His tenure has been marked by efforts to maintain institutional stability and readiness across election cycles.
