Trump Nominates Veteran Diplomat Henry Wooster as New US Ambassador to Kenya

United States President Donald Trump has nominated seasoned diplomat Henry Wooster to serve as the next US Ambassador to Kenya, marking a significant step in strengthening diplomatic relations between Washington and Nairobi.

The nomination, announced by the White House on June 1, will now be forwarded to the US Senate for approval before Wooster can officially assume the position.

According to the nomination notice, Wooster is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service and currently holds the rank of Minister-Counselor. If confirmed, he will become the top US representative in Kenya, one of America's key strategic partners in Africa.

Experienced Career Diplomat

Henry Wooster brings decades of diplomatic and security experience to the role. He most recently served as Chargé d’Affaires at the US Embassy in Haiti and previously held the position of Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs.

Between 2020 and 2023, he served as the United States Ambassador to Jordan, where he played a central role in advancing Washington’s interests in the Middle East. His career has also included assignments in Pakistan, Iraq, France, Russia, and NATO headquarters.

Before joining the Foreign Service, Wooster served as an officer in the US Army. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Amherst College and a Master of Arts degree from Yale University. He is fluent in French and Russian and has working knowledge of Arabic, Persian, and Aramaic.

Succeeding Meg Whitman

If approved by the Senate, Wooster will succeed former US Ambassador Meg Whitman, who stepped down in late 2024 following the US presidential election. Since then, the diplomatic mission in Nairobi has been overseen by a Chargé d’Affaires.

Kenya's Strategic Importance

Wooster’s nomination underscores Kenya’s growing importance in US foreign policy. Kenya remains one of Washington’s closest allies in Africa, with strong cooperation in areas such as security, counterterrorism, trade, and regional stability. The US Embassy in Nairobi is considered one of the most influential American diplomatic missions in sub-Saharan Africa.

What Happens Next?

The nomination now awaits confirmation by the US Senate. Once approved, Henry Wooster will officially take over as the United States Ambassador to Kenya and lead efforts aimed at deepening bilateral ties between the two nations.
