South Korea made an impressive start to their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign after coming from behind to secure a dramatic 2-1 victory over Czechia in their Group A opener.
Playing in Guadalajara, the Asian side showed resilience and quality as they overturned a second-half deficit to claim three valuable points and move level with Mexico at the top of the group.
Czechia Strike First
After a cautious opening period, Czechia broke the deadlock in the 59th minute. Defender Ladislav Krejčí rose highest to meet a long throw-in and powered a header past the South Korean goalkeeper, giving the Europeans an unexpected lead.
The goal threatened to derail South Korea's promising display, but Hong Myung-bo's side responded with determination.
Hwang In-beom Leads the Comeback
South Korea found their equaliser eight minutes later through midfielder Hwang In-beom. After receiving a well-timed pass from Lee Kang-in, Hwang calmly finished to restore parity and shift momentum in his team's favour.
With confidence growing, South Korea continued to press and eventually completed the turnaround in the 80th minute. Substitute Oh Hyeon-gyu finished off a low delivery from Hwang In-beom to score the winning goal and spark celebrations among the Korean supporters.
Son Heung-min Influential Despite Missing Chances
Captain Son Heung-min was unable to add his name to the scoresheet despite creating opportunities and threatening the Czech defence throughout the match. The experienced forward missed several chances but remained instrumental in South Korea's attacking play.
Meanwhile, goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu produced important saves late in the game to preserve his side's advantage.
Disappointment for Czechia
Czechia had opportunities to salvage a point, and Thomas Soucek thought he had equalised in the closing stages. However, the goal was ruled out for offside, leaving the European side frustrated after surrendering their lead.
Despite a disciplined defensive effort and strong set-piece threat, Czechia struggled to cope with South Korea's pace and creativity in the second half.
Group A Standings Take Shape
The victory gives South Korea a strong start in Group A and places them alongside Mexico on three points after the opening round of matches. Czechia, meanwhile, will need a positive response in their next game to keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stages alive.
