Migori Youth Crowned NSL Champions and Earn Historic Promotion to the SportPesa League

Migori Youth have officially been crowned champions of the 2025/26 National Super League after defeating Equity Bank 2-1 in a decisive encounter on Sunday, securing automatic qualification to next season's SportPesa League.

The victory marked a historic achievement for the Sammy Owano-led side, who accumulated 80 points and opened an unassailable lead at the top of the table with one match remaining. The promotion will see the club feature in Kenya's top-flight league for the first time in its history.

Centre-back Vincent Wanga and forward John Juma scored the crucial goals for Migori Youth, while Wayne Mureithi grabbed a consolation goal for Equity Bank in front of a jubilant home crowd.

Speaking after the triumph, head coach Sammy Owano praised his players for completing an incredible turnaround.

"Last season we were fighting against relegation, and now we are league champions heading to the top division. This is a proud moment for everyone associated with the club," he said.

3K FC and Mombasa United Also Secure Promotion

Equity Bank's defeat confirmed promotion for second-placed 3K FC and third-placed Mombasa United. The two clubs currently sit on 76 and 75 points respectively, leaving fourth-placed Equity Bank on 71 points and out of contention for the automatic promotion spots.

Mombasa United strengthened their position after edging Nzoia Sugar 1-0 at Mbaraki Sports Club.

Meanwhile, 3K FC received maximum points after their scheduled opponents, Mwatate United, failed to provide the required ambulance and security arrangements needed for the match.

Club officials from 3K FC expressed disappointment over the situation, saying the team had travelled and prepared adequately for the fixture only for it to be called off due to safety concerns.

Relegation Battle Intensifies

At the bottom end of the National Super League table, Vihiga United's fate was sealed after they played out a 1-1 draw against Luanda Villa, confirming their relegation to the third tier alongside Mwatate United.

The fight to avoid the final relegation spot remains open, with Darajani Gogo and Mully Children's Family (MCF) still battling for survival.

Darajani Gogo claimed a 2-1 victory over Kisumu All Stars, while MCF recorded an identical 2-1 win against Kibera Black Stars.

Elsewhere, Fortune Sacco defeated Gucha Stars 1-0, Soy United and Michael Olunga Foundation Academy settled for a goalless draw, while Kabati Youth came from behind to beat Naivas FC 2-1 and preserve their National Super League status.

A Historic Moment for Migori Youth

Migori Youth's remarkable rise from relegation candidates last season to National Super League champions highlights one of the biggest success stories in Kenyan football this year. Their promotion to the SportPesa League represents a new chapter for the club and promises to bring top-flight football to Migori County for the first time.

As the curtain falls on the 2025/26 NSL season, Migori Youth, 3K FC and Mombasa United can now look forward to competing among Kenya's elite clubs next season.
