The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has intensified its crackdown on corruption after detectives raided the residence of a senior Nairobi County official and recovered more than KSh65 million in cash.
The operation targeted Patrick Analo Akivaga, the Chief Officer for Urban Development and Planning at Nairobi City County. According to the anti-graft agency, the search was part of ongoing investigations into allegations of corruption, abuse of office, bribery, conflict of interest, and possession of unexplained wealth.
Millions Found During Syokimau Raid
EACC investigators carried out the operation at Akivaga’s home in Syokimau, Machakos County, where they discovered KSh51.3 million in cash and an additional USD 113,000, estimated at around KSh14 million. The total amount recovered stood at approximately KSh65.3 million.
Authorities said some of the money was found inside the residence, while another portion was recovered from the boot of the official’s vehicle. The cash was reportedly stored in travel suitcases, which have since been seized as evidence.
Detectives Recover Additional Evidence
Besides the cash haul, investigators confiscated several items believed to be crucial to the probe. These include:
- Title deeds
- Motor vehicle logbooks
- Laptop computers
- Mobile phones and iPads
- Land and vehicle sale agreements
- Nairobi County development approval documents
- Other electronic devices and records
The recovered materials are expected to assist detectives in establishing the source of the funds and determining whether they are linked to corruption-related activities.
EACC Probing Unexplained Wealth
The anti-corruption agency stated that it suspects the official may have accumulated assets that are disproportionate to his known sources of income. Investigators are examining allegations that he received substantial amounts through suspicious cash and mobile money transactions over several years.
Upon completion of the investigations, the commission said it will take appropriate action, which could include prosecution and the recovery of assets believed to have been acquired illegally.
Renewed Fight Against Graft
The latest raid underscores EACC’s renewed efforts to tackle corruption and illicit enrichment within public institutions. Nairobi County’s Urban Development and Planning Department plays a critical role in approving building plans and regulating development activities, making it one of the most influential offices within the county government.
The case is expected to attract significant public interest as investigators continue to unravel the source of the millions recovered during the operation.
