Ruto Bids Farewell to Monica Juma as She Heads to Senior UN Position

President William Ruto has officially bid farewell to Ambassador Monica Juma as she prepares to take up a major leadership role at the United Nations.

During a farewell meeting held at State House in Nairobi, Ruto praised Juma for her years of dedicated service to Kenya, highlighting her contribution to national security, diplomacy, and public administration.

The President described Juma as a highly skilled professional with vast experience in governance and international relations. He also applauded her strong leadership qualities and ability to deliver results in critical government positions.

Juma is set to assume two influential positions at the UN — Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and Director-General of the United Nations Office at Vienna. Her appointment was announced earlier this year by UN Secretary-General António Guterres.

Ruto expressed confidence that the outgoing National Security Advisor would excel in her new international responsibilities, noting that her expertise and commitment would strengthen global efforts in diplomacy, security, and multilateral cooperation.

“Her experience, leadership, and commitment to service will make a significant contribution on the global stage,” the President said during the send-off ceremony.

Juma has built an impressive career in government over the years, serving in several top positions including Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Defence, and Energy, as well as Principal Secretary in various ministries. She has also played a major role in shaping Kenya’s foreign policy and national security agenda.

Her transition to the United Nations marks another milestone in her diplomatic career and positions Kenya prominently within global leadership circles. Analysts believe her appointment reflects growing international recognition of Kenyan professionals in global governance institutions.

The farewell event was also attended by senior government officials, including Joseph Boinett, who has been deputising Juma in the National Security Advisor’s office.
