Siaya Governor James Orengo and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino have accused security agencies of allegedly harassing and intimidating supporters linked to the ODM “Linda Mwananchi” faction in Kisumu.
The two leaders claimed that the alleged crackdown began shortly after the faction held a massive political rally in Kisumu about two weeks ago. According to them, several mobilisers and supporters have reportedly faced intimidation from police officers and suspected hired groups.
Speaking after visiting the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters in Nairobi, the leaders said they had formally lodged complaints regarding what they described as politically motivated harassment. They argued that democratic freedoms and political participation should be protected regardless of political affiliation.
Governor Orengo warned against what he termed as increasing political intolerance ahead of the 2027 General Election campaigns. He maintained that opposition voices and grassroots organisers should not be intimidated for participating in political activities.
Babu Owino also criticised what he described as selective policing, alleging that supporters linked to the movement were unfairly being singled out. The outspoken MP called for investigations into the incidents and urged authorities to uphold constitutional rights and freedom of assembly.
The allegations come at a time when political tensions are rising in different parts of the country, with concerns growing over violence, police accountability, and political intolerance ahead of the next election cycle. Recently, the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) and lawmakers raised concerns over increasing politically related violence and allegations of police misconduct.
Kisumu, particularly areas such as Kondele, has historically experienced heightened political activity and occasional unrest during intense political periods, making the latest claims likely to attract national attention.
