Nottingham Forest Edge Aston Villa as Chris Wood Penalty Seals Europa League Semi-Final First Leg Victory

Nottingham Forest took a crucial step toward the Europa League final after securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Aston Villa in the first leg of their semi-final clash at the City Ground on Thursday night.

A second-half penalty from Chris Wood proved to be the difference in a tense all-English encounter, giving Forest a slim advantage ahead of the decisive return leg at Villa Park next week.

The match remained evenly balanced for long periods, with both sides creating chances but struggling to break down disciplined defenses. Aston Villa looked dangerous early on, forcing Forest goalkeeper Stefan Ortega into important saves, while Emiliano Martinez also produced key stops to keep the hosts at bay.

The decisive moment arrived in the 71st minute when Forest were awarded a penalty after a VAR review ruled that Villa defender Lucas Digne handled the ball inside the area while attempting to block a cross. Chris Wood stepped up confidently and blasted his spot-kick into the top corner, leaving Martinez with no chance.

The goal sparked controversy, with Villa players protesting the decision and manager Unai Emery later criticizing VAR after the game. Emery was also frustrated that Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson avoided a red card following a heavy tackle on Ollie Watkins earlier in the match.

Despite late pressure from Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest defended resolutely to preserve their narrow lead and extend their impressive unbeaten run. The result leaves the tie finely poised before the second leg, where Villa will attempt to overturn the deficit in front of their home supporters.

Forest, two-time European champions, are now just one match away from reaching a major European final for the first time in decades. Meanwhile, Aston Villa still remain hopeful of a comeback under experienced European coach Unai Emery.
