Passengers planning to travel on the Madaraka Express have been advised to report to railway stations at least one hour before departure following ongoing heavy rains and traffic congestion affecting several parts of the country.
In a notice issued by Kenya Railways Corporation, the agency said the move is aimed at ensuring passengers complete ticketing, security screening, and boarding procedures smoothly despite weather-related disruptions.
The corporation warned that road delays caused by flooding and traffic snarl-ups could make it difficult for travelers to reach stations on time, especially in major urban areas such as Nairobi and Mombasa.
According to the advisory, train schedules will remain unchanged despite the bad weather conditions. Kenya Railways emphasized that all Madaraka Express trains will depart strictly at the times indicated on passengers’ tickets.
The Standard Gauge Railway service, popularly known as the Madaraka Express, has become one of the country’s most preferred means of transport between Nairobi and Mombasa due to its reliability, comfort, and efficiency. However, the current long rains season has disrupted movement on several major roads leading to SGR stations.
Kenya Railways noted that boarding procedures usually include ticket verification, baggage screening, and security checks, processes that may take longer during busy travel periods. Passengers arriving late risk missing their trains since platform gates close minutes before departure.
The advisory comes as heavy rains continue to affect different counties across Kenya, with reports of flooding, damaged infrastructure, submerged homes, and transport disruptions. Emergency response teams and government agencies have also urged residents in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant as more rainfall is expected in the coming days.
