Motorists in Nairobi should prepare for traffic disruptions this weekend after the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) announced the temporary closure of a section of the Nairobi Southern Bypass to facilitate the 2026 Nairobi Marathon.
According to KeNHA, the affected stretch between Ole Sereni Interchange and Lang’ata Road Interchange will be closed on Sunday, May 10, 2026, from 6:00 am to 1:00 pm. The closure is intended to ensure the smooth and safe running of the annual marathon event, which is expected to attract thousands of participants and spectators.
The Nairobi Southern Bypass serves as a critical route connecting motorists traveling between Mombasa Road, Lang’ata, and western parts of the city. The temporary shutdown is likely to cause congestion on nearby roads as drivers seek alternative routes during the marathon period.
KeNHA has advised road users to plan their journeys early and cooperate with traffic police officers and marshals who will be deployed along affected sections to manage vehicle movement and maintain order.
Motorists heading toward Lang’ata and surrounding areas have been encouraged to use alternative roads, including Mombasa Road and Uhuru Highway, to avoid delays caused by the closure.
The Nairobi Marathon has become one of Kenya’s major sporting events, drawing elite athletes, fitness enthusiasts, and international participants each year. Authorities say temporary road closures are necessary to guarantee the safety of runners and spectators throughout the race.
Traffic flow along the Southern Bypass is expected to resume normally immediately after the event concludes at 1:00 pm on Sunday.
