Former Faith Odhiambo has urged the Senate to take disciplinary action against nominated Senator Karen Nyamu following controversial remarks directed at a Grade 10 student during a Senate session.
The incident, which occurred during a school voluntary service programme at Parliament, has sparked widespread public criticism and renewed debate about the treatment of minors in public institutions.
According to Odhiambo, the student had visited the Senate to learn about governance and leadership but instead faced comments she described as degrading and inappropriate. She argued that Parliament should provide a safe and respectful environment for young learners participating in civic education programmes.
The former LSK president dismissed Nyamu’s public apology as insufficient, claiming it appeared forced and failed to address the seriousness of the matter. Odhiambo maintained that institutions tasked with protecting children’s rights should demonstrate accountability beyond verbal apologies.
She further referenced constitutional protections for children, including safeguards against psychological abuse and humiliation. Odhiambo insisted that the dignity and welfare of children must remain a priority in all public spaces, especially within government institutions.
The controversy has generated significant reactions online, with many Kenyans criticizing the senator’s conduct and calling for stronger ethical standards among leaders. Several public figures and legal experts have also weighed in, saying the Senate must uphold professionalism and protect young visitors from inappropriate treatment.
Senator Nyamu has since faced mounting pressure from members of the public and civil society groups, with some demanding formal disciplinary measures from the Senate leadership.
